Soap is a cleansing agent made by combining vegetable oils or animal fat (fatty acids) with sodium hydroxide (lye) and water.
The chemical reaction is called “saponification”. After the saponification process is complete all of the lye is neutralized and converted into soap and glycerin.
All real soaps are produced with lye. Real soap is not a detergent and does not contain sodium laurel sulfates or other synthetic surfactants.
No lye, no soap. It’s just that simple.
The FDA refers to natural ingredients as "ingredients extracted directly from plants or animal products as opposed to being produced synthetically."
The "Encyclopedia of Common Natural Ingredients" defines a natural product as a "product that is derived from plant, animal or microbial sources, primarily through physical processing, sometimes facilitated by simple chemical reactions such as acidification, basification, ion exchange, hydrolysis, and salt formation as well as microbial fermentation."
Natural skincare is made from fresh, whole ingredients - without chemical or synthetic additives.
So much of the mass produced cosmetics are made from artificial fragrances, petrochemicals and other additives in order to produce cheap, highly fragrant products. They often include ingredients like parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, other synthetic lathering agents, and harsh chemicals. You don't need to add unnecessary toxins to your environment.
Our environment is full of unhealthy chemicals which threaten our health and well-being - Everyday. Everywhere. Your skin care products don’t have to add to the daily assault. Not if you don’t want them to.
