This past weekend I walked 39.3 miles over 2 days with more than 3,000 dedicated women (and a few good men) in Santa Barbara CA! We were participants of AVON 39 – The Walk to End Breast Cancer. Organized as part of the AVON Breast Cancer Crusade the event raised over $14.6 million dollars in support of research and will provide funds to local service organizations for medication, food and other supportive services to patients battling breast cancer.
This year was my first walk with AVON 39. Heck, it was my first time walking for over 15 hours in two days - my first time doing a marathon and a half!
I was privileged to join a small group of 20 dynamic women who came together from California, Texas and Colorado to create Team O, sponsored by O (Oprah) Magazine. Together we created a force of energy that could not be stopped.
We believed, we trained hard, we raised money, and then we walked and walked and walked until finally, we reached the finish line. One step attime. We had determination and true spirit. We had the power within us......We had moxxie!
“The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade seeks to improve breast cancer outcomes and reduce disparities in survival rates at the community and national level. Our strategic grant making reflects: a holistic and place-based approach in high-need areas throughout the United States; a commitment to enabling access to medical advances and support services for breast cancer patients, particularly those from vulnerable populations; and a commitment to investing in research on the prevention, diagnostics, and treatment of breast cancer.” More..
